Is Your Restaurant Kitchen Pest-Ready? A Simple Checklist

A busy commercial restaurant kitchen

A commercial restaurant kitchen.

The short version Most pest problems in restaurants start with the same few things: gaps, food left out, waste, damp areas and deliveries. Work through this checklist regularly, and book a professional inspection to catch what staff can't see.

Why restaurants and bars are targets

Commercial kitchens offer food, warmth, water and plenty of hiding places. That combination attracts roaches, rodents, flies and ants. And because one sighting can be enough for a guest to leave a bad review, prevention is a lot cheaper than reacting.

The checklist

1. Seal gaps and cracks

Check around pipes, vents, doors, drains and where equipment meets walls. Fill gaps and fit door sweeps. Pests use even small openings.

2. Store food properly

Keep food in sealed containers and off the floor. Rotate stock, and don't let cardboard and packaging pile up.

3. Manage waste

Use bins with tight lids, empty them often, and clean the bins and the area around them. Keep outside bins well away from doors if you can.

4. Clean drains and grease traps

Food and grease build-up in drains and floor sinks feed flies and roaches. Include them in your cleaning schedule.

5. Fix leaks and manage moisture

Repair dripping taps and pipes, and dry floors and sinks after closing. Moisture is one of the biggest attractions for pests.

6. Check deliveries

Inspect boxes and packaging before bringing them inside. Cardboard can carry roaches and eggs in with it.

7. Look under and behind equipment

Pull out or lift equipment during cleaning where it's safe. Crumbs, grease and warmth behind appliances make ideal hiding spots.

8. Schedule regular professional inspections

Staff are busy, and pests hide. A professional can spot early signs, find entry points and recommend a preventative plan that fits your business.

Train your team. A checklist only works if staff know what to look for and who to tell. Droppings, live pests, chewed packaging and unusual smells should be reported the same day.

What happens at an inspection

A technician checks inside and outside the property, looks for signs of activity, works out where pests are getting in and what is attracting them, and explains what was found. You then get a clear recommendation. Protek Pest Services offers a free, no-obligation inspection across St. Kitts & Nevis.
